Pregnancy- Second Trimester

Mom, Speaker, Maternity, Pregnancy, Baby

At this point in my pregnancy both my husband and I had told our families that we were expecting but we had not yet told our coworkers the news. I was still not showing in the beginning of my second trimester and luckily I didn't have any pregnancy symptoms like nausea so it was easy for me to be able to keep it a secret at work. I wasn't quite sure how I wanted to announce my pregnancy at work yet until in an early morning huddle another one of my coworkers made an announcement that she was expecting in early August. I was so excited to hear about her news but in the back of my mind all I could think about was now we were going to have two people on maternity leave for potentially 12 weeks. I asked when her due date was and to my surprise it was only 2 week after mine. I looked at her and then looked at my manager with a surprised look. Another one of my coworkers jokingly asked if there was something I wanted to add. That is when I announced that I was also due in July. Everyone was shocked but also exited for the both of us. Around this time I was still waiting for the results of my NIPT test to let us know not only the gender but also if there were risks of genetic abnormalities. Coincidentally my coworker who was also pregnant was also waiting on her results since she too had participated in NIPT testing. When I received the phone call from the nurse about my results I was so nervous that I didn't really know how I was supposed to respond to the reveal of the gender. When she told me the results I replied with, "Oh, that's awesome". I feel like I should have maybe responded more enthusiasm. Inside I was so happy. I secretly wanted a girl but I would have been happy with either results. One thing that I also did find out was that I did have something show up from the carrier screening. I found out that I was a carrier for cystic fibrosis. I had heard of the disease but I didn't know a whole lot about it. After the phone call I did a little research and then called my husband to tell him the news. I wanted to keep the gender a secret until I was able to tell him in person later that night. Since I was a carrier for cystic fibrosis my husband had to also get his blood drawn for a carrier screening. If he was not a carrier then we would be in the clear but if he also was a carrier then we would have a one in four chance that our daughter would possibly have cystic fibrosis. Fortunately, my husband was not a cystic fibrosis carrier as well so the only risk we have is that I have possibly passed the carrier gene onto her. Later that night I quickly ran to the store to get two cupcakes and pink frosting to fill in the center. When I got home I gave him a cupcake to bite into and inside was the pink frosting. He was so excited. We had decided that we didn't want to do a gender reveal party with our family and we wanted to tell our families as soon as we found out. So that night we called our parents to tell them the good news. That next day at work me and my other pregnant coworker announced the gender of our babies together. She was having a boy and I announced I was having a girl. Since I kind of have a shy personality it was nice that I was able to share some of the spotlight with my other coworker who was right along with my pregnancy journey. It wasn't until later in my second trimester that I started to show a little baby bump. As soon as I saw my stomach starting to stick out a little I lathered on the bio oil. I would use it every morning after taking a shower and luckily I was able to keep from getting stretch marks. It wasn't until my third trimester that I started to get more noticeable pregnancy related symptoms.

First Week Home

When we got home we introduced the dogs to our daughter. They were skeptical of her and were a little afraid. They had never seen a baby before and it was funny because every time she moved they would jump. They eventually warmed up to her once they got to investigate her a little bit. The cats on the other hand didn't want anything to do with her. Later that evening we got a call from the hospital with the results of her bilirubin test she had gotten that morning. Her results were worse than they were the day before and she was now at the level where she needed phototherapy. Someone from the hospital drove to our house that night and dropped off a  biliblanket.  Biliblankets are used for  phototherapy that helps break down high levels of bilirubin in the bloodstream. It  exerts a blue/white light of varying intensity that permeates through a light fabric. The baby is then placed on the blanket  during treatment. We were instructed to keep her on it as much as we could over the

From The Beginning

Let me start by thanking you for listening to my story and letting me share my experiences with you.  I will start my story letting you know a little bit on how my husband and I met. Our story began back in 2007 when we were both in high school. We met in history class our junior year in high school. He was a laid-back skateboarder and I was an angsty teen who was into photography and music. It was a project for my photography class that brought us together. We dated all through high school and in college we moved in together. During our time in college we adopted 2 cats (female- mixed breed, male- flame point siamese) and 2 dogs (female & male- husky and malamute mix). Shortly after graduating with our bachelor's degrees at Wichita State University we got engaged. My husband went back to college to get his master's degree in Mechanical Engineering and I worked my way up at a local credit union in town. Fast forward to now, we have been married for two years and needl

Pregnancy- Third Trimester

By this time I was starting to have a definite baby bump and my symptoms were starting to get a little more noticeable. I was feeling the back aches and the heartburn but I was also feeling the good ones too like the stronger movements of her kicks. My heartburn had started to get so bad that I had to keep a stash of tums with me at all times. I was eating them like they were candy. To help with my back aches I used a heating pad  during the day and at night I slept with a body pillow . I really liked the U shape of this body pillow and it was also very soft and fluffy but was still very supportive for my hips and back.  Around this time I was clearly showing enough that customers at work felt comfortable  about assuming I was pregnant. The biggest question people had for me was if my husband and I had picked out a name yet. My husband and I are somewhat of procrastinators. We had been looking at names but we didn't really find anything that we both liked. It wasn't until
