My husband and I found out that we were pregnant November 2017 and we were so excited. We had been trying to start our family for the past few months prior and I had been off the pill since January 2017. We first found out that we pregnant with a home pregnancy test, you know the ones that have the one line for not pregnant and the two lines for pregnant. Well I was still not convinced that the test was accurate since some of the lines were faint so I bought the home pregnancy test that tell you literally if you are pregnant or not pregnant like this. Its nice because it has a little digital display screen that has a loading screen after you saturate the applicator. Once it is done loading it displays either pregnant or not pregnant. There isn't a faint line or a faint word that makes you question whether it's accurate or not. After the little mini celebration between my husband and I we decided that we wanted to keep it a secret until we were able to get our first sonogram picture to show our family. On my husbands side he has two sisters, an older sister who has 3 boys and a he has a younger sister. On my side of the family I am an only child so my mother was very anxious about having her first grandchild. As soon as my husband and I got married the first question our families had for us was when we where going to start having kids. We knew that our exciting news would be much anticipated by our families so we wanted to make it a surprise but also we wanted to make sure that the risk of miscarriage was lower before we let them know. It was hard keeping this secret because we both wanted to let our families know and also we were still being asked regularly if we had decided when we were planning on starting our family. Little did they know we had already started but we had to keep a straight face. So at Christmas time we made ornaments for both our mothers with a picture of our first sonogram. My mother was the first one we told and she was ecstatic. At first she was confused as to what we gave her because the picture was just a black and white image with a bean shaped object in the center. Once she read what was on the ornament and put the pieces together she started balling. Tears were shed, not only by her but by myself and my grandmother who was also there with us. We then next gave the ornament to my husbands mother at the Christmas party at his older sisters house. We instructed his mother to open up our present first. She too was confused at first and then looked at both of us and started tearing up. Everyone was so excited and we were excited now too because we no longer needed to keep it a secret anymore. Everyone started asking questions as to how far along I was and if we knew the gender yet. With our first sonogram at 8 weeks I also participated in a non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) with a carrier screening. It is a blood test, which helps in detecting Down’s syndrome and other chromosomal abnormalities. This test can also find out fetal DNA present in your blood, which would determine the gender of your baby. This test is usually intended for females who have a higher risk of carrying a baby with genetic disorders. But those who have lower risk can undergo the test as well. We told our families that we had done the NIPT testing so we would know soon what the gender would be. I still kept my pregnancy a secret at work with my coworkers but I told my managers after the holidays. It wasn't until I was about 12 weeks that I ended up telling my coworkers my news. Oddly enough my announcement at work didn't go as planned.
